A Note on the Dayton ALS Walk
Jim Flahive, Mickey Hughes, & Jim Hughes
I lost a cousin to ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease). WE lost Jim Hughes - an athlete, a Harvard Law alum, and (better still) an incredibly great person. I will be walking in the Dayton ALS Walk on September 21, 2025, probably with tears in my eyes. That's very much as I walked it in 2023 & 2024. I have known precious few people as impressive as my departed cousin, yet his true strength was in reaching down to build up those who were not at his amazingly high level. I was fortunate to see Jim in that way, to have him build me up, and I will remember him on this walk. I am hoping to continue Jim's legacy and build up people with ALS by supporting this walk. Jim would have done that.
Sure it's a fundraiser; that is immaterial. If you choose to donate, that is great. If not, I get that as well. I just wanted to brag on my cousin and recall my great fortune of having known Jim Hughes for a while at least.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone, and presently there is no known cause or cure.
Jim Hughes is great enough to change all that. And definitely worth the effort.
