Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to move, speak, swallow and breathe. Someone is diagnosed with ALS every 90 minutes and their life expectancy averages only 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone, and even though it has been recognized as a disease since the 19th century, there is still no known cause or cure.

 

We’re walking to change the statistics. To bring help and hope to those living with the disease.

 

When Chris received his diagnosis in 2021, we were stunned! We didn’t know where to begin learning about this new life path we had been set upon. ALS United Ohio has been invaluable to us, providing knowledge resources, access to medical experts, and connections to other ALS patients and their caregivers to share experiences and learn from each other. They also provide a financial grant program for patient care, resources for caregiver support, on-staff Care Services Coordinators,

collaboration with Multi-Disciplinary ALS Clinics, a medical equipment loan program, and bereavement support. I cannot stress enough how critical this organization is in helping us to cope with this horrible disease and its impact on our lives.

 

With their help, the past two years have brought incredible advancements in ALS research, expanded access to care for people living with ALS, and enabled legislation that impacts the quality of life of people with ALS and their families. But we can't stop now. The key to a cure begins with you.
