A Note on the Dayton ALS Walk
I recently lost a cousin to ALS (also known as Low Gehrig's Disease). WE lost Jim Hughes, an athlete, a Harvard Law alum, and (better still) a great person. I will be walking in the Dayton ALS Walk on September 29, 2024, probably with tears in my eyes. That's very much as I walked it in 2023. I have known precious few people as impressive as my departed cousin, yet his true strength was reaching down to build up those who were not at his high level. I was fortunate to see Jim in that way and I will remember him on this walk. I am hoping to build up people with ALS by supporting this walk. Jim would have done that.
Sure it's a fundraiser, but that is immaterial. If you choose to donate, that is great. If not, I get that as well. I just wanted to brag on my cousin and recall my great fortune of having known Jim Hughes for a while at least.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone, and presently there is no known cause or cure.
